Researchers at the Temple University in Philadelphia are working to create a virtual speech therapist that they say would help patients who have lost their speech skills due a head trauma or stroke. The design of the therapist would be such as to enable people to practice their language skills after insurance cover has stopped paying for visits to human therapists.
Virtual Speech Tool, A Necessity- Experts
Experts are of the opinion that the virtual speech tool is a necessity because the speech disorder known as aphasia can prove to be a lifelong battle for the patient. The existing virtual speech therapies revolved around the patients reading scripts. However, the proposed avatar would challenge patients to spontaneously generate speech via conversations with the virtual model.
One exercise with the virtual therapist involves patients pretending that they are planning a vacation with it, which in this case would be playing the role of a travel agent.
